Student Music Philosophies and Usage of Envrionment Affordances: Free Improv Envrionments

Abstract

From 2023-2024 I participated in a free improv performance art group that employed avant-garde, Dada, guerrilla theater, and more in its armory of communication. I observed the hipocrasies that arose in their social behavior on and off stage. I noted patterns of resistance to documentation, resistance to yet recreation of stratification and authority, common themes of discourse, philosophies of self and life course, etc. I interviewed many and included them in the transcription an dinterpretation of their words. My prioritizations of reflexivity ensured that I noted how, where, when, why, for how long, in relation to who, did my own behaviors and philosophies on music and life change because of my participation in these performances and lifestyles. This study is essential to comprehend the internal pedagogies of the arts of creative groups using varying levels of institutional reliance, as this study occured on college grounds but existed far before that, and will exist far beyond.
