The Pedagogy of Practice: Social Justice and the Arts Within and Beyond the University

Abstract

Studying the arts in a university setting can seem a rarified endeavor. Colloquium participants will review methods for breaching the separation between the classroom and the world outside academia by coupling critical perspectives on literary arts with hands-on artistic practice and by engaging in issues of social justice. Participants include writers of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry from the U.S., Lebanon, and Greece, each of whom teaches social-justice-focused university classes in literature, writing, and publishing. Key questions include: how do we use the arts and arts pedagogy to engage meaningfully with large-scale issues of equity, justice, access, solidarity, and human rights? How can we empower students both to consume and to make art responsibly? What are our obligations as artists and teachers during times of political and social upheaval? Where’s the line that separates what we do from propaganda? The colloquium will consist of short presentations, a conversation among panelists about social justice arts pedagogy, and ample time to expand the conversation to audience members.
