Reviving, Sustaining, and Embodying Traditions: Reconnecting Communities through Folk and Ceremonial Theatre in Moravian Wallachia

Abstract

The research explores the revival and preservation of folk traditions in Moravian Wallachia through theatrical principles and folk-ceremonial theatre. By conducting interviews with local elders and engaging in ethnographic research, Sara Matusova collaborates with communities to reenact selected traditions, emphasizing a dramaturgical and directorial approach that ensures these customs are genuinely experienced in the present day. Her work investigates the shared emotional resonance these traditions evoke among contemporary audiences—and seeks to uncover why such communal engagement persists. Through her methodology, Sara has revitalized forgotten customs, revealing personal stories and memories that breathe new life into fading practices. An interdisciplinary approach—melding oral history, ethnography, theatre studies, and anthropology—serves as a powerful tool to ignite local memory and cultural identity. This methodology develops community life, fosters intergenerational dialogue, and re-enacts traditions, emphasizing authentic, lived experiences. The PhD project aims to restore these traditions from staged performances back into village life, promoting genuine remembrance and participation. Overall, this research invites dialogue on how thoughtful dramaturgical strategies can invigorate living traditions, promote intergenerational exchange, and develop vibrant community life rooted in shared folklore. It demonstrates how theatre can serve as a vital means of cultural preservation and community cohesion.
