Collaborative Learning, Collaborative Action: A Case Study Combining Learning from Arts and Design and Youth and Community Pedagogies

Abstract

Emergent from previous research ‘Autonomous Youth: the impact of voluntary participation in youth-led music collectives in the North East of England in the 1980s’, (Gill, Smith et al. 2023,) and drawing upon the value-based processes of Community and Youth Work (C&YW) and social arts practice methods of Art & Design (A&D) this research expands upon two key findings: Professional learning of undergraduate researchers in cross disciplinary, collaborative and participatory research design, delivery and analysis. Individual tangible legacy, lifelong learning and ‘becoming’ through connection and informal education rooted in participatory practice. Housed within egalitarian values of C&YW, Participatory Action Research, and arts research practice, this research works across A&D and C&YW disciplines in collaboration with ‘Sunderland Culture: Culture Start,’ a place-based charity helping children and young people access free creative and cultural activities. This case study involves University of Sunderland students and apprentices on placement with Sunderland Culture working with young people to design a bespoke arts/culture project using the creative methods of printmaking. This will be inductive and experiential, combining skills, knowledge, behaviour and praxis of each professional discipline to work with a youth sector organisation in planning and completing a contextual arts project. Exploring how students apply and extend distinct professional disciplines. We aim for action at a local project level; and to inform future cross disciplinary module collaboration; increase student life choices and options in and across professional degree programmes; develop acquired learning and skills development for the young people involved; extend the culture start aim professional learning.
