Enhancing the Impact of a Documentary about War in Ukraine and Resilience through Cross-National Discussions Among University Students

Abstract

War is… for some it frames their daily life and death, for others it’s a distant feature of current events. This poster poster presents a unique intervention research study that examines the impact of a documentary film about the war in Ukraine among university students who are either being directly affected by the war, i.e., Ukrainian students currently in Ukraine, or students who are thousands of miles away, i.e., American students currently in the U.S. The documentary, “Soldiers of Song” examines resilience among Ukrainian performing artists in their responses to the Russian invasion of their country. The basic hypothesis is that the positive impact of the documentary will be enhanced by cross-national discussions for students from both the war-zone and those who live far away. The intervention, based on COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), compares students who viewed the documentary and discussed it only with their classmates (the comparison group) versus students who discussed it with peers from the other country, i.e., Ukrainian and American students discussing it via Zoom (the treatment group). There has been virtually no research that has examined the impact of cross-national versus intra-national discussions of movies about war on the opinions and emotional reactions among university students. This study includes a pre-post design that incorporates a standardized measure of resiliency. Pre-intervention data collection has begun with the post-intervention data collection to be completed by late November. Results from this study can be used by educators and advocacy groups who show documentaries about war.
