New Horizons of Craft Blowed Glass in Industrial Design Education: A Study Case in Marinha Grande Context

Abstract

Within the scope of a degree project discipline in Industrial Design, a professional training protocol was carried out integrated in the academic study plan, with CENCAL located in Marinha Grande, a city with a glass tradition since 1750 and the main national glass production pole, where mostly industrial and automatic glass factories are installed, with few active units of manual glass. Glass, due to its ductility, physical, chemical and aesthetic properties, has been a material of experimentation for designers since the mid-twentieth century in Portugal. The briefing consisted of the development of everyday products on a hand scale, based on versatile moulds and using the technique of hand-blown, rotated or stopped glass. The teachers invited the designer Vítor Agostinho, a specialist in mutant moulds projects, to teach a theoretical-practical workshop, to complement the preparation of students for practical training at CENCAL. The goal of the teachers was to teach design based on experimental prototyping around the glass material and its infinite possibilities, challenging students to experiment, thus contributing to scientific knowledge through design. It sought to revalue and reintegrate the manual production of glass in decline and to promote the approximation between future designers and master glassmakers, in articulation with the learning of design as a project and as an integrative and collaborative methodology. As a complement, study visits were promoted to the Marinha Grande Glass Museum and to the local industries where glass design projects are present as manual knowledge intersects with industrial manufacturing processes.
