Abstract
In recent years, the San Diego-Tijuana region has faced growing environmental problems across multiple issue areas, including, but not limited to, marine and freshwater pollution, air pollution, the loss and fragmentation of critical natural habitats, and diminishing freshwater supplies. While these challenges have inspired the creation of institutions, governmental partnerships, and other transboundary initiatives, city-to-city and state-to-state paradiplomacy efforts are still in their nascency. This project studies both the paradiplomatic efforts that are already in place, and imagines new collaborative solutions to the many coupled socio-ecological issues that the region is facing. These solutions may include formal political and economic partnerships, as well as attempts to leverage shared social and cultural ties in order to maintain ecological and human health within the region.
