Immersive Journalism as Visual Advocacy: Reframing Narratives Through XR and Empathy-Driven Storytelling

Abstract

As the media landscape continues to evolve, immersive journalism has emerged as a transformative practice that challenges traditional modes of reporting by positioning audiences within the story. This presentation examines the power of immersive images—particularly those delivered through virtual reality (VR) and 360° video—to serve not only as storytelling tools but also as agents of advocacy that shape cultural conversations and promote empathetic understanding. Through case studies such as Clouds Over Sidra and Enemy, the research explores how immersive formats offer emotionally engaging, first-person experiences that deepen public awareness around issues such as displacement, conflict, and identity. Drawing from qualitative content analysis, thematic interpretation, and interviews with immersive media creators, the study highlights how XR technologies can challenge dominant narratives, foster social responsibility, and empower marginalized voices. The immersive image is analyzed not only as an informational asset but also as a vehicle of cultural agency—capable of encouraging civic participation and reframing global issues through human-centered perspectives. The ethical implications of immersion, including transparency, editorial independence, and algorithmic bias, are addressed within the broader framework of responsible innovation in journalism. This research aligns with the conference’s special focus on “The Image as Advocate,” offering insights into how immersive journalism contributes to a more inclusive, empathetic, and visually-driven public sphere. Ultimately, the study invites reflection on how emerging technologies can redefine the journalist’s role as both storyteller and social advocate in a digitally mediated world.
