Abstract
This study explores the relationship practices of Filipino Lovers (FL) as depicted in media representations. Specifically, it examines the portrayal of couple relationships through Instagram (IG) contents and its embedded Artificial Intelligence (AI). The present study assesses the FL’s aesthetic normalization of #relationshipgoals represented by selected online media texts. It hopes to fill the knowledge and methodological gaps on the role IG-AI on relationships and aesthetic normalization by FL through textual analysis following a two-step qualitative methodological approach. Findings indicate that the FL did not regard being in IG-AI as an important marker of their #relationshipgoals as it is merely to overcome jealousy and do surveillance, show social proof, construct a new love language, confront with flirtatious interactions, and share kilig [romantic excitement] moments. Furthermore, IG-AI’s dynamics include reel-to-real transitioning, over-sharing and flooding, and filtering and deepfaking to normalize aesthetic and at the same time achieving #relationshipgoals.
