Comphet is Ableism's Nextdoor Neighbor: #Neuroqueer Counterdiscourses on TikTok

Abstract

While we have some ideas of how marginalized groups are using social media, not much is known about the novel hybrid identity of neuroqueer that is being strategically deployed over social media. My findings from a critical discourse analysis of 40 TikTok videos suggest that people who identify as LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent are using social media to share stories and information about their identities and experiences. I argue that this information-sharing and storytelling represent forms of counterdiscourses that both offer alternative perspectives on gender, sexuality, and ability and highlight an entanglement of privilege and stigma. By virtue of these counterdiscourses, which are being circulated through the platform affordance of hashtags, such as #neuroqueer, is an emergent neuroqueer counterpublic that reshapes cultural narratives and how we think about the politics of visibility in the hyper-digital age.
