Putting Safety First: Employing Modern Technology to Eliminate Unseen Mental Health Barriers for Construction Professionals

Abstract

Stigma constitutes a significant barrier to male construction professionals seeking mental health treatment. This study examines the sociocultural dimensions of men’s acculturation within the construction industry, focusing on stigmas that reinforce behaviors associated with mental health issues, particularly the impact of cultural factors and traditional masculine norms (Graves et al., 2023). This study examines the human and systemic factors that contribute to the use of technology to foster mental health, wellness, and safety training, adopting a multidisciplinary approach to addressing CP safety concerns. The findings of this study suggest that construction professionals (CP) should incorporate practical technology adaptations to support good mental health (Rasendran & Ahmad, 2021). The study identifies strategies to foster an organizational culture that prioritizes safety culture and promotes the wellness, health, and safety of CPs. To achieve this, CP needs must be integrated into organizational and industry policies and procedures. Support for CPs must be communicated through effective platforms that facilitate the modernization of mental health, wellness, and safety training (Anireddy, 2024). This research suggests that there is potential to enhance industry wellness and safety by integrating innovative technology and behavioral change management strategies. Consequently, this study demonstrates that agility is a reflexive capability that requires leadership, maintenance, and ongoing recalibration. Agility necessitates dynamic interaction among human systems, emerging tools, and ethical foresight (Streit et al., 2021). Additionally, this study examines contemporary trends in mental health innovation and modern construction safety technology. Lastly, this study provides recommendations for addressing barriers created by stigma that affect CPs.
