Abstract
This paper explores the multifaceted world of sculpture in Iloilo City, a historic city located in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Iloilo is known for its rich cultural heritage, Spanish colonial past, and strong Catholic traditions, all of which significantly influence its artistic expressions. The study investigates the history, socio-economic conditions, and language of sculpture within this specific locale. The research employed descriptive methods, primarily involving interviews with local sculptors to gather first-hand accounts and specialized terminology. Additionally, the research reviewed existing literature to provide a broader context. Key findings reveal that sculpture in Iloilo City is deeply intertwined with religious practices, particularly the creation of saints’ figures, which has been a significant part of its artistic tradition since the Spanish colonization. The study also documents a unique glossary of terms used by Ilonggo sculptors, highlighting the specialized language of this art form. However, the research indicates that the sculpture industry faces challenges, including economic constraints and a perceived lack of appreciation for the art form, which hinders its potential contribution to the local economy and tourism. In conclusion, while sculpture holds a vital place in Ilonggo cultural identity and history, its current state requires greater recognition and support. The study emphasizes the need to preserve this artistic heritage and explore its potential for economic and cultural development in Iloilo City.
