Abstract
A presentation with keynote film clips showing how cinema can shift awareness and behavior. The Hopis say: “Those who control the stories rule.” Based on our on going work this compares the effectiveness of the dramatic and comic narrative storytelling in cinematic media with the non-narrative documentary. We explore storytelling themes of distress and compassion and how they stimulate shifts in how we see and what we do. Throughout my professional filmmaking career I have made many films advocating specific points of view, social action and ethics. Some of these have been very commercial theatrical movies and movies for television as well as television series with aims at changing behavior. We will emphasize what cinematic artistic elements are successful in making a difference in the perceptions of viewers.
