Art on Container Ships by Stojan Batič: 3D Visualisation of Interiors Based on Black and White Photography

Abstract

The technical maritime heritage in Slovenia is preserved in the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum in Piran, where the company Splošna plovba Piran was founded. In most cases, the transport ships were left behind as scrap metal. Through the artistic interpretation of the black and white material, we wanted to recreate a part of the ship’s interior that we can no longer experience today. Three-dimensional visualisations and animations are an attempt to walk through the spaces that once housed Batič’s art and many sailors who sailed the world’s oceans with their rich art collection. The interpretation of the past thus involves the interpretation and translation of a two-dimensional medium into a spatial virtual design and the translation of Batič’s manuscript and its forms into objects that are recreated using modern 3D technologies and devices. In addition to the documentary video and photo archive, we wanted to use a research and creative project to draw attention to the heritage that has not perished, but has been sold, cut up and devalued by the decision-makers. The design and architectural heritage was lost with the sale of the ships, and the 3D visualisations, which allow the public to take a video walk through the interior of the ships, are an attempt to preserve and present Batič’s sculptural traces in situ. We offer the viewer access to spaces that no longer exist. In Piran General Navigation, works of art were saved from destruction, reminding us of our rich maritime past.
