The Art of Video Game Music: A Pedagogical Approach

Abstract

The study covers the history, theory, and practice of video game music as presented in a newly developed course at Fitchburg State University. The objective of the course is to analyze the form and function of game music, to develop an understanding of the musical elements, and to strengthen critical listening skills in order to understand game music as an art form. The relevance of such study is to engage students with classical and contemporary classical music through a familiar medium, video games, thus merging old with new forms. The study of video game music is interdisciplinary involving the fields of music and game design. The methodologies include readings, discussions, analysis of music in and out of the game, music elements and music terminology quizzes, and creating a chip tune. The effectiveness of the knowledge activities will be evaluated by the instructor on an individual basis over the course of the semester, noting evidence of the development of deep critical listening skills. Teaching classical and contemporary classical music through video games intrinsically motivates and engages learners. The process is interactive and immersive resulting in the development of critical listening skills. In conclusion, teaching classical and contemporary classical music through video games is an effective methodology because video games offer a familiar and enjoyable environment in which to develop critical listening skills and to appreciate video game music as an art form.
