Abstract
This paper introduces the Critical Literacies Advancement Model (CLAM), developed by Dr. Petra A. Robinson, as a holistic framework for addressing the hidden risks of climate change through education and social action. CLAM organizes nontraditional literacies into five categories: foundational, sociocultural, psychosocial and environmental, technological and informational, and social justice literacies emphasizing how critical literacy skills can lead to informed decisions, behaviors, and actions that support long-term sustainability and wellbeing. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate how CLAM can serve as a practical tool for engaging diverse stakeholders in technical, political, and social responses to climate change. Using a qualitative, conceptual analysis of the model, the presentation highlights how critical literacies such as environmental, ethical, digital, and civic literacy enable learners, educators, and policymakers to identify unsustainable practices, challenge inequitable systems, and foster resilience in communities disproportionately impacted by environmental disruption. As part of this application, we will share the Climate Across the Curriculum program currently being piloted at Louisiana State University, including an example syllabus that illustrates how CLAM guides integration of climate literacy across disciplines. This case will demonstrate how adult education, and higher education can collaborate to prepare global citizens equipped to address climate change. By equipping individuals with the literacies necessary to recognize interconnected risks and act collectively, CLAM advances equity, justice, and sustainability as essential measures of success.
