Abstract
Ungoverned spaces, severely exacerbating both security challenges and the impacts of climate change. This crisis is a major concern, as rampant deforestation directly contributes to local climate vulnerability and environmental degradation, while insecurity has led to the deaths of scores of civilians, security personnel, and government workers. A review of literature and recent data highlights Nigeria’s significant tree cover loss, with the North-East being particularly vulnerable due to its semi-arid climate and high dependence on forest resources. (Nigeria lost 1.44 Mha of tree cover between 2001 and 2024, a 14% decrease, with forest destruction being the dominant driver in 93% of the loss). This paper, therefore, investigates the synergy between poor governance, human impact on the environment, and escalating security threats in Nigerian forest zones from a local perspective. The study utilizes a mixed-method approach—combining oral interviews, newspaper desk reviews, and pictorial representations to identify the major drivers of insecurity, such as illicit logging and agricultural expansion, which are often fueled by extreme poverty and the failure of government policy. The findings show that ineffective forest management, outdated policies, and the alienation of host communities create a safe haven for criminal gangs and insurgents. This paper advocates for a multi-faceted corporate social responsibility model, emphasizing the roles of NGOs and security outfits in enhancing security and promoting good governance. Suggested solutions include the deployment of well-equipped Forest Guards, a comprehensive review of the outdated Forestry Act, increased community-led forest management, integrating forest zones into viable economic.
