Intercultural Leadership: The Power of Storytelling and Dialogue

Abstract

This session draws inspiration from the Civil Rights Movement in the United States during the 1960s and its present-day relevance. This workshop explores how storytelling and dialogue can serve as transformative tools for fostering inclusion, understanding, and leadership. Participants will learn practical strategies to bridge cultural divides and create environments of belonging and mutual respect. The Civil Rights Movement illustrated how storytelling united communities for social progress. Today, these principles remain vital in fostering inclusive leadership. By reflecting on historical lessons and applying them to contemporary challenges, participants will harness the power of their narratives to lead with empathy and purpose. Specific Aims include educating participants on storytelling’s role in promoting intercultural understanding; highlighting the Civil Rights Movement’s lessons for modern leadership; providing strategies for fostering dialogue and challenging biases; inspiring participants to embrace diverse perspectives and build unity. We frame storytelling and dialogue as leadership tools. Historical foundations are based on lessons from the Civil Rights Movement. Interactive activities include personal storytelling and group discussions. Strategies for Inclusion rely on tools for active listening and empathetic communication. Action planning involves roadmaps for sustaining inclusive leadership. To conclude we review key takeaways and community-building resources.
