Abstract
How do we combat the polarization, violent conflict, and tribalism that so dominates geopolitics today? This session explores the idea that change begins with interpersonal relationship-building: befriending “the other.” Artist and reconciler Parfait Bassalé will unpack “The 3 C’s Framework for Befriending” as a model for centering common humanity in interpersonal interactions that can also guide systemic decision-making. Based on the pillars of courage, curiosity, and compassion, this model catalyzes interpersonal empathy, transforms relational dynamics, and opens the door for innovative policymaking. Using storytelling, guided reflection, academic frameworks, and the speaker’s original songs for social impact, this session will equip participants with tools for building relational bridges and making policy decisions that center belonging for those who are typically left on the margins. Participants will have a chance to unpack their positionality in decision-making that could further entrench othering or be transformed towards belonging; and they will learn from other participants through discussion activities to brainstorm ways to expand belonging in their communities and institutions. Altogether, participants will be inspired (through music and discussion) and equipped (with frameworks and language) to pursue greater belonging through befriending.
