Economies of Speed for Rural Economic Growth: Capitalizing on Connectivity Innovations to Leverage Rural Advantages

Abstract

The scale and pace of commerce continues to accelerate with markets becoming more global while businesses and consumers expect ever faster delivery of products and services. In the rural Appalachian region of the United States, residents, communities, entrepreneurs, and industries must be able to capitalize on “Economies of Speed” – the ability to access regional, national, and international markets expeditiously - to both compete in and be served by this economy. Fortunately, innovative connectivity enhancements in transportation, communications, and workplaces are mediating the region’s historical disadvantages while enhancing emerging advantages. This paper describes recent research on strategies that capitalize on these innovations to support economic and community development in the Appalachian region and their applicability to other rural regional economies globally to capture “economies of speed” now and into the future.
