Commodity, Culture and Interconnectedness: A Case Study of Chinese Commodities in Medieval Northern Kerala

Abstract

This paper brings forth historiographical analysis of interconnectedness within pre-modern Maritime Asia with special reference to Chinese commodities within medieval ballads from northern Kerala coast in India. Vadakkanpāttukal, also known as ‘ballads of Northern Malabar’ alludes to many commodities with prefixes ‘Cheena’ in their names that connotes to connections with Imperial China in history. Using the theory of constructivism in International Relations, the paper examines how material interactions influences the inter-subjective understandings outlined within particular cultures. The trade and diplomatic connections that Imperial China established with the emerging maritime polities of coastal Kerala abruptly ended by the mid-fifteenth century AD.
