The Streaming Platforms: A Global Cultural and Economic Disruptive Force

Abstract

The rise of streaming platforms across the world has been one of the most powerful cultural and economic force to unfold in the last 25 years. Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Showmax in Africa, iQIYI in China, JoCinema in India etc - also referred to as Subscription Video On Demand/SVOD - have impacted everything from content creation, media production and distribution to viewing patterns and social engagement. In addition to these SVOD services which often charge a fee of some type there is another streaming platform which charges no fees and is very popular YouTube. This streaming platform has over 2.49 billion monthly users or roughly 122 million global users daily. YouTube is unique in that the majority of what it streams is User Generated Content/UGC uploaded by the users of the platform. This paper examines the cultural, economic, political and social impact of these platforms/services both in the short and long term.
