The Changing Role of the Architect: Balancing Creativity, Technology, and Collaboration in an AI-Driven Future

Abstract

This research investigates the evolving role of the architect in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on how AI-powered language models such as ChatGPT can influence and potentially reshape architectural design workflows. As digital tools increasingly mediate architectural practice, the study aims to examine whether ChatGPT can serve as a complementary or alternative approach to parametric design methodologies. While parametric tools optimize geometry through algorithmic constraints, ChatGPT introduces a text-based, generative process rooted in ideation, iteration, and narrative development. The research employs an experimental, case study-based approach to evaluate the performance and creative potential of ChatGPT versus parametric tools in addressing a mid-scale architectural project. Through controlled design tasks, the study compares outcomes based on creativity, efficiency, feasibility, and workflow dynamics. Key design parameters include spatial organization, human experience, functional integration, and sustainability considerations. Data will be gathered on design quality, iteration cycles, and workflow impact, followed by a comparative analysis to assess each method’s strengths and limitations. A literature review and theoretical framing contextualize the emergence of AI tools within architectural discourse. The expected outcomes include practical insights into AI-enhanced ideation, best practices for integrating language models into architectural workflows, and a critical reflection on how these tools redefine collaboration and creativity in design. The research also addresses ethical and professional implications, contributing to broader discussions on the future role of the architect in a technologically augmented design landscape.
