Abstract
Looking at changes in design practice since the mid twentieth century’s emphasis on systematic approaches, Liedtka suggests that design thinking offers futures that are just beyond our grasp. I propose a similar historical review of design to consider its promise and potential in light of limitations, not just through materials or technologies, but in our attitudes or thoughts about what is possible. The paper does not offer solutions but rather considers the framing and context for innovation to help broaden understanding between a goal that we hope to achieve, and what we may accomplish in its place.
