Teaching Motion Design Principles to Graphic Designers: How Principles of Motion are Derived from the Principles of Design

Abstract

Graphic design education is rooted in the classic elements and principles of design. From this basic foundation they learn semiotics, typography, systems, icon design, grid systems, patterns, etc., mostly in a static context. As soon as motion enters the picture the education sometimes borrows from media such as TV/Film, cinematography, the twelve principles of animation, or other forms of time-based media. I have created a series of Principles of Motion that are based on the elements and principles of design, making this language mirror the basic design education graphic design students and design teachers are accustomed to, rather than borrowing from other industries. This paper details these principles and also provides a free-to-use resource for teachers and students to rely upon.
