Intercultural Context Based Approach: Communicative Competences for Language Development

Abstract

From Vygotsky’s socio-cultural principles up to the Cultural Historical Acquisition Theory, the role of culture on individuals’ cognitive development has been progressively considered a fundamental feature to be integrated on the establishment of educative paradigms worldwide, mainly on highly developed nations, theoretically speaking, at least. Nevertheless, little has it been researched on the practical extent interculturality based pedagogy has on learning and acquisition of a second languages. This lack of praxis proposals based on intercultural awareness and competence development is derived from the common misbelief that, once in contact with a foreign/second language, the learner immediately awakes interculturality. However, the reality still needs to be re-shaped, understanding that intercultural competence requires pedagogical, didactical and methodological configuration in order to be adequately taught. Likewise, for deepening into a transversal, eclectic, critical and transcending second/foreign language learning, an Intercultural Context Based Approach needs to be proposed, aiming at granting a meaningful appreciation and apprehension of language and cultural competences. This paper exhibits the process and findings of the methodological approach as implemented on a second language learning context, demonstrating how highly effective and coherent it is to bound a teaching sequence from both intercultural and communicative competence, making the second language learning a means of expression rather than a goal on itself. The approach is configured in a way that can be easily implemented by any teacher in any context beyond language classrooms, indistinctively from the themes and disciplines to be integrated.
