Beyond and in the Margins: A Voyant Tools Analysis of Central and Peripheral Themes in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Macbeth and Othello

Abstract

This study examines Shakespeare’s significant tragedies Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello using Voyant Tools. This research extends the traditional literary analyses and explores using digital text analysis “beyond the margins.” Some key thematic words for these three tragedies are revenge, power, jealousy, madness, and guilt. Within Voyant Tools, Shakespeare’s complex layering of narrative structures are intended to map central and marginal themes with the selected tragedies of Shakespeare. In particular, specific tools such as Trends, Links, Contexts, and Cirrus are utilized in order to map contextual usage, relational patterns, and the frequency. This study analyzes the use of digital humanities methods for examining classic literary texts like Shakespeare’s tragedies Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello.
