Abstract
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and its progressively wider impact on many sectors requires assessing its effect on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The main goal of this paper is to answer the question “Is AI a game-changer for sustainable development?” that is, can AI become a powerful tool for tackling some of the world’s most pressing development challenges? Many scholars and experts believe that AI is potentially a game-changer for sustainable development because it can bring education and health care to remote areas, help farmers boost their crops, help design sustainable housing and transportation, and provide early warning for natural disasters. The paper argues that while AI presents immense potential, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges associated with its implementation. Several issues could slow – and in the worst cases negate – progress toward achieving the SDGs.
