Framing the Schemata : Nigerian Media Coverage of Women Rights and Developments in Nigeria

Abstract

Women underrepresentation, framing, coverage and gender inequality issues generally have been dominant in Nigeria and Africa for many years. Despite efforts by the government and civil society organizations, women and gender inequality remain significant problems. The media has played a cogent role in portraying this issue and bringing it to the limelight for public discourse. However, the perceptions of media coverage of women rights and related-gender inequality in Nigeria have become issues that necessitate constant attention, taking precedence that, a balanced society is definitely a free and peaceful society. Anchoring on the feminist theory, the paper adopted a secondary and content analysis methods to uncover the secret underneath these representation, framing and coverage of women rights and related-issues extensively by the media. The paper delves to provide answers to the following delineated and highlighted questions: How are women and their rights represented by media in its day-to-day coverage, especially in Nigeria? What framing does media accord women rights and gender related issues in its publication? Do media coverage of women and gender-related affairs receive adequate coverage as supposed to be? What is the level of Academic media, especially peer-review articles, in coverage of women rights and developments in Nigeria? What solutions can be proposed to alleviate this inadequate representation, framing and coverage of women rights by Nigerian media? Finally, the paper recommends that more still need to be done before women rights and gender-related issues are given adequate representation, framing and coverage by Nigeria media and global media generally.
