Interpersonal Communication During End-of-Life Stages

Workshop Presentation
Sarah Hess,  Morgan Sparks,  Emma Mayne,  Mark Kelton

How do you find the right words when someone you care for is nearing the end of life? In those sacred, often fragile moments, communication becomes more than just words—it becomes a vessel for comfort, meaning, and peace. In this workshop, we will explore the vital role of interpersonal communication during end-of-life stages, focusing on spirituality, religious involvement, and discussions of mortality in these human interactions. Rooted in the Value Communication Strategies outlined by the New England Journal of Medicine and supported by research from the National Institute of Health, our training will equip you with practical tools to engage in meaningful, empathetic conversations when they matter most. We will delve into empathetic language, nonverbal communication, and give real-life scenarios that illustrate what effective end-of-life communication looks and feels like. Whether you are a healthcare provider, caregiver, family member, or friend, by the end of this session, you will feel more confident navigating end-of-life conversations with clarity, grace, and heart.
