Abstract
The wellness industry is a multi-trillion-dollar industry and wellness tourism, the intersection of tourism and wellness, focuses on travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s well-being. Inclusive wellness tourism focuses on creating welcoming and accessible experiences for all individuals, regardless of background, gender, body shape or health status. When wellness tourism is done correctly, it enhances the quality of place for tourists and the quality of life for residents. A narrative literature review was conducted in this study, as it explores the breadth of research on a topic and maps key concepts from diverse studies. The objective was to explore existing research and the range, extent and nature of inclusive wellness tourism. A narrative review allows for a broad approach and includes grey literature to include a broader range of sources. A preliminary review revealed in excess of 80 peer-reviewed articles published between 2019 and 2025. The study highlights the important role of the use of technology in enhancing health and wellness tourists’ experiences. The findings further indicate that the focus tends to be on the tourists and not the residents. This narrative review forms the base for future research, highlighting key practical and theoretical concepts as well as trends and themes for future research.
