Impact of Sport Fitness Social Media on Women's Emotions, Body Image, and Motivation

Abstract

The current research study investigated women’s emotional changes, body image perceptions, and motivational responses to women’s sport fitness media in real-time using eye-tracking methods. Understanding the link between social media content and motivation can lead to more responsible content creation in the sport fitness industry. To analyze women’s perceptions a three-step research process was utilized. In the pre-testing and post-testing phase, participants completed a survey related to their current emotional state, body image perception, and motivational scale. In the testing phase, participants viewed a series of social media posts related to women’s health and fitness while wearing eye-tracking glasses. The variables were assessed using paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. The intervention resulted in significant decreases in anxiety, dejection, anger, happiness, and body image perception, while excitement and general motivation remained unchanged. A significant decrease in objective motivation was also observed, highlighting the intervention’s varied impact on physical activity motivation. The findings can help sport fitness accounts refine their content strategy. They can tailor their posts to evoke positive emotions, thereby enhancing user engagement and emotional well-being. The study’s insights can be used for health promotion and education campaigns, helping them utilize social media platforms effectively to engage and motivate women to pursue healthier lifestyles. By investigating how emotional states may influence motivation toward exercise, this study can provide practical implications for fitness professionals and trainers. Additionally, the examination of visual attention through eye-tracking methods revealed which types of content and posts capture the most attention.
