Abstract
Sport is viewed as a powerful development tool and social connector. Sport and physical activity programs are, therefore, effective means of encouraging healthy learners, development, and teaching positive values and life skills. This study investigates the influence of a school-based sport program on learners and teachers in South African public schools. In response to declining participation in school sport and growing concerns regarding the development of learners, this research explores how inclusive school-based sport initiatives impact personal, social, and institutional development within schools. Using mixed-methods, descriptive research design, data were collected in two phases (November 2023 and May 2024) through questionnaires (learners: N = 271, teachers: N = 74), document analysis, and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program (SPSS), while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. The findings revealed that the program significantly enhanced the learners’ physical, personal, and social development. It also contributed to increased sport participation and a more inclusive and engaging school environment. Furthermore, the findings highlighted that the teachers in the public schools are of the opinion that they have observed notable improvements in learners’ interpersonal relationships and attitudes, alongside their own development of skills and involvement in promoting sport and physical activity. The study highlights the value of sustainable, inclusive school-based sport programs in fostering holistic development and improving the broader school environment. The researcher recommends strengthening collaboration between stakeholders, including the government, non-government organizations, and schools, to ensure continued support for the long-term impact.
