Cultural Diversity in Sports Education

Abstract

Globalization has merged the world’s cultures, yet there are some societies in need of a broader cultural lens. Sports is a vehicle to assist in the introduction of new culture through the implementation of diversity in sports education. Athletes should be introduced to sports from all over the world, understand its origin, and be able to play a multitude of different sports, not just ones centered on their home country or hegemony. There are some sports directly aligned with sustainability that come from Indigenous and less popularized cultures that can help shape the way we live. These sports include sailing, fishing, spearing, and in some aspects farming. This session is designed to reintroduce sport education professionals to the often forgotten sports that are essential for our survival in the future.
