A Study on Active Ageing of Very Old Master Athletes of Distinction in Shanghai and Hong Kong

Abstract

The average life expectancy in Shanghai reached with men at 80.8 years and women at 85.6 years, a little lower than men at 82.8 years and women at 88.4 years in Hong Kong. This research explores what was behind a number of master athletes of distinction as octogenarians and nonagenarians in the twin cities. Their attractive performances had highlighted the values in providing an insight into sport and vitality, and might suggest, in some sense, certain human model of active ageing and wellness. The long-term survey traced and evaluated the cultures and living styles behind their successful stories. The twin cities as their life circumstances were both highly developed in culture, technology and economy. The dimensions usually identified in active ageing such as physical, cognitive, psychological and social functioning were also included in this research. These components could be seen as integration of the eastern and western cultures. Considerable attention was also paid to the effectiveness of master athletics and city marathons as well as the traditional exercises such as Taichi and Yoga. Thanks to today’s fast-developing AI technology, its products promoted popular sport development more than ever. As the Olympic spirit prevails in the twin cities, to the sense of active ageing Olympism is still a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind.
