Sport as a Catalyst for Peace, Leadership, and Environmental Resilience: Integrating Athletic Frameworks into Global Systems for Sustainability and Cooperation

Abstract

This presentation explores the intersection of sport, leadership, and environmental resilience as a pathway to strengthen peace and sustainability. Sport is one of the few global languages that transcends borders, cultures, and ideologies, offering a powerful platform for fostering cooperation, trust, and collective action. Building on a systems-based approach, the session examines how values embodied in sport—teamwork, fair competition, and resilience—can be applied to organizational leadership and institutional design.

The research purpose is to highlight how sport-based frameworks can serve as catalysts for advancing peacebuilding and climate-conscious practices across communities and institutions. Methods include comparative analysis of case studies where sport has mobilized communities, bridged divides, and modeled regenerative practices.

The implications are twofold: first, demonstrating that athletic platforms can extend beyond recreation to influence policy, diplomacy, and environmental stewardship; and second, offering leaders and organizations a replicable framework for embedding resilience and cooperation into their work. The presentation will engage participants in considering how sport can contribute meaningfully to sustainable development and peacebuilding goals at multiple levels.
