Athlete Culture and Climate Survey 2024: Understanding Abuse and Misconduct in U.S. Sports

Abstract

The 2024 U.S. Center for SafeSport Athlete Culture and Climate Survey examined the prevalence of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse among American athletes. Conducted by the Center in partnership with Pacific Research and Evaluation, this survey represents the second comprehensive assessment of athlete experiences since 2020. Between January and February 2024, 3,762 athletes representing 67 sports completed the survey, including both National Governing Body-affiliated and non-affiliated participants. Findings reveal concerning rates of harm despite overall positive athletic experiences. While 72.1% of athletes reported positive life impacts from sport participation, 80.8% experienced anti-inclusive behaviors, 78.4% encountered emotional harm and neglect, and 35.3% experienced physical harm. Sexual misconduct affected significant portions of respondents: 36.3% received unwanted sexual comments, 10.9% experienced unwanted sexual contact, and 3.5% reported rape or attempted rape. Mental health concerns were prevalent, with 53.1% struggling with depression or anxiety and eating disorder rates increasing from 21.6% in 2020 to 30.2% in 2024. Marginalized athletes faced disproportionate harm. Non-binary athletes, athletes with disabilities, and Black athletes reported elevated rates of discrimination and abuse across multiple categories. Despite widespread misconduct, only 10.7% of athletes experiencing unwanted sexual behaviors filed formal complaints, citing concerns about credibility and organizational inaction. Additionally, only 54.1% of athletes had prior awareness of the U.S. Center for SafeSport. These findings underscore urgent needs for improved reporting mechanisms, targeted interventions for vulnerable populations, and enhanced athlete education regarding available resources.
