Abstract
This study explores how creative play can introduce sustainability concepts to young children through recycled and natural materials. In early childhood education, encouraging material reuse challenges throwaway habits and fosters environmental responsibility from a young age. While Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) have gained recognition, the use of hands-on, play-based learning to apply sustainability principles in early years settings remains underexplored. This paper presents findings from a practice-based research project conducted in a daycare kindergarten in the United Arab Emirates. The study examined how two themed learning areas, the Messy Corner and Literacy Corner, were designed using recycled and natural resources to support both creative expression and environmental awareness. Data were collected through classroom observations, teacher reflections, and design process documentation. Findings indicate that children engaged in open-ended activities that encouraged imaginative thinking and artistic exploration, while also showing early signs of environmental care. In the Messy Corner, activities such as painting with clay and mixing natural textures promoted sensory engagement. In the Literacy Corner, children created stories using reused objects, linking language, play, and environmental understanding. These experiences helped children connect their actions to sustainability in meaningful ways. The study highlights how well-designed learning environments can support both creativity and early environmental values. By using recycled materials in everyday play, educators can promote responsible behavior in a way that is developmentally appropriate and engaging. This research contributes to the growing field of ESD by demonstrating the value of experiential learning in early childhood education.
