Abstract
This paper presents a project integrating digital musical creativity in secondary education in Switzerland. The aim is to raise students’ awareness of sustainability issues. Successive environmental and societal crises are impacting educational institutions around the world as they reflect on the disciplines they teach (Morel 2022). Music is no exception to this new order. Here, two teachers take up the issue in the implementation of a teaching sequence. They examine how musical knowledge integrates and promotes sustainability in an uncertain world, and the influence of societal issues on the content of music lessons. The teaching project’s ambition is to explore how to integrate creativity and musical skills and knowledge linked to digital music technologies. It focuses on the creation of soundtracks with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) from an exerpt of Denis Villeneuve’s movie «Dune ». At the same time, it takes into account societal imperatives such as the active involvement of students in a project conceived and carried out in common. This project has both aesthetic and political ambitions for a “sharing of the sensible” (Rancière, 2000). Students must use digital tools in innovative ways (composition, editing, MIDI recording, etc.) to transform their collective learning experience into a digital musical experience and to build their social awareness. Analysis of the activities in the digital logbook (Padlet) tracing the creative process provides an insight into the targeted learning, where the convergence of musical/digital knowledge and sustainability issues gives full meaning to the project’s overall objective.
