Common Spaces for Sustainable Futures: An Intercultural and Interdisciplinary Learning Experience

Abstract

This project explores how sustainable and inclusive shared spaces can be reimagined through intercultural and interdisciplinary collaboration. Developed jointly by the ETSAM (UPM, Spain) and FH Münster (Germany), the initiative involve about 70 students from Architecture and Industrial Engineering working in Spanish–German pairs. The purpose is to integrate architectural design, technical feasibility, and social inclusion within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The methodology combines task-based pair work with collective synthesis. Each pair addresses a specific subtask—ranging from local needs analysis, conceptual design, and economic modeling to storytelling and final editing—while the group produces a shared outcome such as a video, podcast, or interactive poster. Weekly milestones (kick-off, draft preparation, feedback, and final production) foster iterative learning, intercultural dialogue, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. The expected implications include improved communication and teamwork skills in intercultural settings, a deeper understanding of how design can balance sustainability, affordability, and inclusivity, and the creation of a transferable model for future EELISA activities. Beyond the final product, the project contributes to the EELISA mission by showing how collaboration across disciplines and countries can generate innovative, socially relevant, and feasible solutions for sustainable futures.
