Designing with Tikanga: Co-Creating Digital Futures for Te Reo Māori through Kupu Rangi and Whakatipu i tō Reo

Abstract

This paper explores how participatory and tikanga-led design approaches can support cultural sustainability, language revitalisation, and community empowerment through technology. Centred on two interconnected case studies—Kupu Rangi and Whakatipu i tō Reo (Grow Your Language)—the paper examines how collaborative design practices can embed te ao Māori values within digital learning environments. Both projects evolved from partnerships between Spark New Zealand, design educators, and students, guided by kaupapa Māori principles such as ako (reciprocal learning), kaitiakitanga (guardianship), and manaakitanga (care). Kupu Rangi reimagines language learning through a celestial interface, where kupu (words) become stars forming constellations of identity, whakapapa, and connection. Drawing inspiration from Maramataka and Matariki, the design adapts to natural rhythms, creating an intuitive and culturally grounded experience. Whakatipu i tō Reo extends this approach through gamification and community engagement, visualising language growth as pua (flowers) that flourish through shared learning and collective participation. Together, these projects demonstrate how indigenous knowledge systems can shape the form, function, and social purpose of digital technologies. They illustrate the potential of participatory co-design to bridge the virtual and the real, where learning becomes an act of cultural renewal and social inclusion. This study reflects on how culturally grounded design can reconfigure technology as a medium for connection—fostering belonging, reciprocity, and sustainable futures for te reo Māori and its communities.
