Rewilding as a Part of the Biodiversity Turn in Urban Planning

Abstract

The colloquium includes the following four presentations and conclusive discussion: 1) Not Only for Humans: The Biodiversity Turn in Urban Planning (Prof. Juho Rajaniemi), 2) Tactical Urbanism for Wellbeing: Insights from Two Biodiversity Squares (Dr. Himansu Mishra), 3) Urban Biodiversity Interventions: A Design Tool for Planetary Health (Dr. Laura Uimonen), an 4) Urban Biodiversity Dedication through GIS Analyses and Collaborative AI Planning (M.Sc. Urban Studies Damiano Cerrone. Recently, urban planning has undergone a significant change that we call the biodiversity turn in urban planning, a genuine paradigm shift from human-centric to biodiversity-friendly planning. The turn stems from the understanding of the alarming state of biodiversity, biodiversity policies steering urban planning practices, the questions concerning multispecies agency and justice, as well as the urban planning and design concepts responding to the need to improve biodiversity. In the colloquium, we present how biodiversity interventions can reintroduce ecological complexity and benefit public well-being. We also share experiences from two multidisciplinary research projects – BIWE (Biodiversity Interventions for Wellbeing) and MUST (Enabling Multispecies Transitions in Cities and Regions). We also introduce GIS analyses and collaborative AI planning as means to bridge communication gaps between academic research, municipal politics and the wider public.
