Artificial vs Emotional Intelligence - Challenges and Opportunities in Mental Health Care: Navigating the Future of Therapy and Support in a Tech-Driven World

Abstract

As mental health care increasingly integrates artificial intelligence (AI) tools—from diagnostic algorithms to digital therapy platforms—the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in therapeutic settings faces new challenges and opportunities. This study explores the dynamic interplay between artificial and emotional intelligence in mental health care, emphasizing how these approaches can complement rather than compete with each other. We examine the benefits and limitations of AI applications such as chatbots, predictive analytics, and virtual therapy, alongside the irreplaceable human skills of empathy, emotional awareness, and nuanced interpersonal connection. Drawing from current research and real-world case studies, this presentation highlights how mental health professionals can harness AI’s efficiency and data-driven insights while preserving the compassionate, emotionally intelligent care essential for client trust and recovery. Participants will gain practical strategies for integrating AI tools into clinical practice without sacrificing the human element. The session also addresses ethical considerations, cultural responsiveness, and equity implications as technology becomes more prevalent in mental health services. Ultimately, this session encourages a paradigm shift toward a hybrid model—where artificial intelligence enhances, supports, and informs emotional intelligence—to improve access, personalize care, and foster holistic mental wellness in an increasingly tech-driven world.
