Abstract
Trauma is everywhere particularly among, particularly among specialized populations such as older adults, individuals living with physical and mental health challenges, children and youth, and racialized communities. This presentation explores the important role of listening and understanding in the application of trauma-informed care. Using the core principles of trauma-informed care – safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment, cultural/historical/gender considerations and peer support – we will discover the power of genuine, empathetic listening and how this can foster trauma-informed principles. We will explore current research and best practices throughout the session to see how trauma manifests uniquely among different people and social contexts. Practical strategies will be provided as well as interactive learning.
