Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop : Seeing Beyond What's Literal

Abstract

Here I present the guiding principles and findings of a creative writing workshop, which I have run for several years. The workshop considers “seeing” in the literal and non-literal sense, and inspires poetry as a vehicle for expression. After a brief presentation on ekphrasis and technique in poetry, participants write poems that mirror the meaning behind art images. While participants are readily able to find a common language that describes the geometry of an image, or which actions are depicted, they have difficulty verbally expressing the emotional content that an image inspires. This workshop will demonstrate that words can circumscribe the contents of a painting or photograph even as they open the possibility of meaning that goes beyond what’s literal.
