Abstract
The Fabric Workshop and Museum has a unique collection of over 400 artist boxes. These archival boxes hold process materials from our collaborations with contemporary artists. Over the past almost 50 years, FWM has invited contemporary artists to collaborate with our studio. We ask artists to try something that they have never tried before, to dream big, and to trust in the process of collaboration. These sketches, material tests, letters, and early samples, tell the creative story of how a project was realized. They also tell the emotional story of collaboration which involves sensitive communication, trust, adaptability, resourcefulness, and a comfort in the space of the unknown. Unpacking these boxes offers students, museum visitors, and artists a model of creative courage, tools for successful collaboration, and evidence that within the space of the unknown is the potential for discovery and growth. This session offers participants a look inside an artist box and presents a hands-on making activity that bolsters participants’ capacity to respond to creative challenges, reimagine non-traditional materials, apply resourceful thinking, and create an environment of adaptability and collaboration within their own institutions.
