True Inclusivity: Emotion as the Key to Engaging All Visitors

Abstract

Sadly, the U.S. is not alone in experiencing what may be called a crisis of empathy. With figures from Elon Musk to prominent evangelical leaders decrying empathy as a sign of weakness, or even a sin, there is a mounting threat on schools and organizations that foster its development. Museums now, perhaps more than ever, must take up this work in earnest, centering emotional learning in our spaces in order to “contribute to human dignity and social justice,” per ICOM’s definition of museums. Fortunately, museums are ideal spaces for encouraging empathy. Focusing on emotional responses and perspective taking are inherently inclusive practices. Every human being, regardless of their physical abilities or lived experiences, has emotions, making them the ultimate universal entry point. This workshop session will offer opportunities to experience and discuss practices that have been tested in museum settings as ways to engage visitors of all ages, using emotion as the key to exploring the rich and varied objects and ideas presented.
