Museum Making Sense : Co-designing Better Museum Artistic Experiences with Visually Impaired Individuals

Abstract

This research addresses the need to enhance gallery art experiences for visually impaired individuals through multisensory design. It addresses the challenge of visual accessibility in traditional galleries by adopting a co-design approach with visually impaired users. Using the Workshop for Inclusive Co-created Audio Description (W-ICAD) model, the project co-creates creative audio descriptions and explores the interconnections between tactile and auditory experiences to foster inclusive art engagement. The methodology combines case studies, co-design workshops, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research through design. Ultimately, the project promotes inclusivity in art, advances cultural accessibility, and supports disability rights within museum spaces.
