Women’s Roles in Abrahamic Religions: A Study of Hagar

Abstract

This study employs the story of Hagar to investigate perceptions of women’s roles among Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Through close reading and interpretation, from a woman’s perspective, of accounts of Hagar in sacred texts including the Bible, Talmud, Midrash, and Hadith, and through comparison with the interpretations of other female scholars such as Rabbi Marla J. Feldman, Dr. Phyllis Trible, and Dr. amina wadud, the research explores a range of religious perspectives on this shared story.
