Religion in Postchristendom Society: Towards a Spirituality of Inhabitation

Abstract

Western postchristendom society is mistrustful and resentful towards religion. The Christendoms of the past and the present – authoritarian (political), conformist, expansionist (colonial), antagonistic to diversity (inquisition) provoking fear (silence) – have left an indelible mark on the world. Christian nationalism today is a case in point. Indigenous theology offers a foundational reset, a kenotic subversion of Christendom, that humanizes the oppressed, the marginalized, the humiliated, the unrecognized and the unheard so that we may once again become peacemakers and ambassadors of reconciliation. Pneumatology preceding Christology, the Spirit preceding the Word, the breath of God breathing new life, proposes a new posture for Christians in a secular, postchristendom world where their identity as the New Man is that of engaged citizens in the cultural, social and political spheres of society.
